2010 Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration & Peacemaker Award

The 24th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration and Hawai’i Peacemaker Award was held Monday, January 18th at 7:00PM at Church of the Crossroads.

The Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Black, recently- elected President and General Minister of our denomination, the United Church of Christ, was the Keynote Speaker.

The Hawaii Peacemaker Award was presented during the service to Dr. Amy Agbayani, Director of Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity at the University of Hawai’ i at Manoa.
Dr. Agbayani is a tireless advocate for the civil rights of Filipinos and other marginalized groups in Hawaii today. She was founder and first director of Operation Manong — now known as the Office of Multicultural Sciences, an organization providing training to all UH-Manoa students on multiculturalism and pluralism. Amy was appointed first chair of the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission. She also helped to start several civil rights community organizations.

The Crossroads’ Choir also performed spirituals, music of Verne de la Peña, Dave Brubeck and Langston Hughes.
Church members, neighbors and friends also sang hymns during this meaningful celebration.
